Old-Growth Trek: Dunbar Brook

In Monroe State Forest, view one of the state’s rarest ecosystems, hidden to untrained eyes. Only one in a thousand acres of Massachusetts forest is considered "old-growth;" it has never been cut and remains in its true natural state. Learn to read the signs of an ancient forest and how it differs from the woods we know. This 2-mile guided hike involves some steep uphill climbing, but rewards visitors with an uncommon experience in an environment found few places on the East Coast. Ages 8 to adult. Free to the public. Registration required by 11:00 a.m. the Saturday of the program. To register or for more info, email Park Interpreter Christian Drake at christian.drake@mass.gov, or call (413) 339-5504, leave your name, phone number, date of program, and number in your party. Hike leaves from Dunbar Brook Trailhead off River Road in Monroe, MA, at 1:10 p.m. - sharp!
